PEN Prep, LLC
What is PEN Prep?
PEN Prep is a combination of osmotic laxative developed to cleanse the bowel before endoscopic, radiologic, or surgical procedure.
The preparation was developed to maximize patient compliance by enhancing the taste and minimizing the volume of the ingested ingredients. The prep kit is designed to make the preparation of the bowel as safe and palatable as possible.
What can be expected during the Prep?
The taste has been greatly improved over many of the existing preps on the market today, but of course, the end goals is to evacuate the bowel as much as possible. This means that the effect will be one of diarrhea. Also, the ingested volume of this prep kit is also very manageable.
What are Possible Complications of PEN Prep?
PEN Prep is very well tolerated, but some patients may experience some symptoms of dehydration. It is important to hydrate yourself after the procedure as much as possible. Follow the instructions included in the kit as closely as possible. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact your doctor's office.
What can I expect after I finish with my Prep?
Once you finish the Prep, you should show up for your scheduled exam. You should not have continued evacuation of your bowel after the procedure is complete. You should try to drink one or two 8 - 10 oz sports drinks such as Gatorade or PowerAde after the procedure is completed and your physician has cleared you for oral intake.
Contrast X-Ray Studies
If your doctor has determined that you need a contrasted study of your abdomen or pelvis, you may need to take a bowel prep kit to enhance the value of these tests. It is important that you follow the prep instructions to avoid false positive results due to retained food or fecal material in your gastrointestinal tract.
